frequently asked questions
what exactly is mindfulness for kids, and how does it work?
At Soul Happy, we see mindfulness as an essential life skill. By teaching kids to pause and check in with their inner world, it allows them to choose how they want to show up in the outer world. It’s not about sitting perfectly still or clearing the mind (because every mind is beautifully busy!). Instead, we teach kids how to safely explore the connection between their mind, body, and heart through playful movement, sensory awareness, and gentle breathing techniques. It’s a step-by-step map that guides them from high-energy bursts to moments of deep, restorative calm. As adults, we often ask children to “please listen, please focus, or our favorite, please calm down.” Listening, focus and the ability to calm down is a skill that has to be taught and practiced. Mindfulness teaches us how to do all of those things! But just like any skill, we need a safe space to learn and practice our skills.
my child has so much energy! can they really practice yoga and mindfulness?
Absolutely—in fact, they are our favorite kind of practitioners! Mindfulness isn't just about stillness; it's about authentic expression. We meet children exactly where they are. By channeling their vibrant energy into purposeful, physical movement first, we naturally guide their active nervous systems into a gentle, focused state of ease. Movement is the doorway to their quiet inner space.
how does Soul Happy fit into a standard school day?
We wrap around the school day beautifully! Our programming is designed to seamlessly integrate into standard classrooms, physical education blocks, or after-school spaces. We offer everything from quick, chair-based mindfulness breaks that teachers can lead right at their desks to full mat-based movement classes. By setting up predictable, joyful routines, we help schools transform transition times—like returning from recess or gearing up for testing—into smooth, peaceful resets.
what is SEL programming, and why is it built into your sessions?
SEL stands for Social-Emotional Learning, and it is the heart of everything we do. It’s the process where children learn to understand and manage their emotions, feel and show empathy for others, establish positive relationships, and make responsible decisions. We don't just teach physical poses; we thread emotional regulation, self-awareness, and compassionate communication directly into our activities. When kids learn how their physical bodies react to stress and how to use their breath to anchor themselves, they are learning how to actively practice social-emotional intelligence in real-time.
what does the data say about youth mental health right now?
It's no secret that our kids are carrying a heavy load. National data shows that youth stress, anxiety, and feelings of burnout are at an all-time high, often trickling down from the fast-paced, high-stress environments around them. When children are constantly in a "fight-or-flight" state, the brain's learning center essentially goes offline. That’s why proactive mental health tools aren't just an extra addition to their day—they are an absolute necessity for survival and success.
what are the benefits of introducing mindfulness to children early?
Introducing these tools early completely reshapes how a child’s nervous system navigates life. The data is clear: consistent mindfulness and embodied movement practices lead to massive shifts both in the classroom and at home.
how do you support educator well-being?
When educators thrive, students thrive. A classroom's energy is dictated by the nervous system of the adult leading it. Teachers are facing unprecedented levels of burnout, which is why our school partnerships offer dedicated adult wellness workshops. We empower school staff to reclaim their own energy, joy, and purpose with science-backed self-care practices. When an educator learns to breathe through the chaos, they naturally co-regulate and soothe the energy of every single child in their room.
